Scriptures: Judges 4-5
Reflection Song: “War Cry” by Micah Stampley
What Had Happened Was…(the modern summary)
So Boom…(the revelation)
In the patriarchal society of the Old Testament, it was uncommon to find a woman in this capacity of leadership. A judge’s role was not only civic, but also militant. Deborah was entrusted to handle civil matters for her people, to strategically lead them into war, and to serve as a prophetess. Deborah commanded respect from her peers, with the Israelites traveling to her palm tree for judgment, and even Barak, her military commander, refusing to go into battle without her by his side.
The story reminds us that to amass support in leadership, confidence is essential. Imagine the task of inheriting the mantle of judges who came after Joshua, the one who led the Israelites into the Promised Land. Deborah not only talked the talk, she went into battle with her people. Real leaders show up when their team needs them. It takes confidence and faith to proclaim, “The Lord will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.” Her time as judge over Israel was so significant that songs were written about her victories, proclaiming, “the leaders took the lead in Israel” and “she struck Sisera; she crushed his head; she shattered and pierced his temple.” This type of intentional leadership is contagious. It is bold, and it is chain-breaking.
